Taking care of your wicks

Fuel

Always use paraffin exclusively. Benzine and meths burn much hotter and will decrease the life span of your wicks. Petrol or diesel will kill you.

The long soak

The first time you want to burn you need to soak your wicks for at least half an hour before you burn. In the case of a staff that's half an hour a side. If you let your wicks dry out completely, (touch them, if there is no oily residue on your fingers that means they are too dry) you will need to do the long soak again.

Spin off

Spin your wicks as hard as you can before you light them. This is to remove all the excess paraffin from the wicks to prevent them from spraying fire everywhere (burning drops of paraffin in your eyeballs hurts like snot.) . Don't do this where you could spray anyone or any cars as paraffin is not good for the paint.

Burn time

You will find that one of your wicks or one end of your staff will burn longer than the other. This is normal as your "on" hand is stronger than your "off" hand. Do not re-light your wick after it has gone out, the wick has run out of fuel and if you re-light it you will be burning your wicking.

Douse

After every burn you need to douse your wicks in the paraffin. This Is very important. It does not need to be for a long time, generally soak it till it stops bubbling. (Don't inhale the fumes that come off.)

Aging wicks

if your burn time starts to get shorter, all you need to do is tighten the three screws on each wick.
